I’m SEW excited to reveal my finished quilts for my next pattern, Forkledoodle, and tell you a little about the pattern. The pattern releases next Friday, November 22, 2024. I wll have an early buying opportunity with a 20% discount for my newsletter subscribers that starts on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. So, if you want access to that discount, go ahead and subscribe to my newletter.
Here is the fabric requirements page for anyone who would like to plan ahead.
Why the name?
I know a lot of you are probably wondering why I chose to call this pattern “Forkledoodle”. I’ve been getting this question on social media. What is a forkledoodle anyway, and why am I naming my pattern after it? I do happen to really love this pattern name. It’s delightfully ridiculous, don’t you think?
For most of my patterns, with Sarah Elizabeth being the only exception so far, I tend to chose names that hint at either the construction or the look of the quilt or both. For this one, I wanted to name it something that didn’t really have anything to do with how the quilt looks or goes together, just a unique and fun quilt pattern name.
The first name I thought of was a word I used to hear people say a lot when I was younger. I always thought it was a nonsense word, and it was perfect for this pattern. Even though I was SURE it was a nonsense word, I always google my pattern name ideas first. A quick google search revealed that not only was it NOT a nonsense word, there are also mutliple quilt patterns out there with this name. So, back to the drawing board. I decided to make up my own nonsense word, and I asked the little SnuggleBug for help. He came through as usual. “Forkledoodle” was his idea. He said it was the username he made up for one of the games he plays. He is allowing me to use it as long as I pay him and let everyone know that the name was his idea. So, good job little SnuggleBug, and payment sent!
Details about the pattern and my cover quilts
The pattern makes a 60″ x 75″ top. There are instructions for both a layer cake friendly scrappy version, and a two color yardage version. I used all beautiful Benartex fabrics to make my cover quilts.
For the layer cake version, I used “Upwords” by Kimberly Einmo for the foreground, and “Classic Keepsakes” by Kanvas Studio.
For the two color version, I used all pieces from the “Upwords” line by Kimberly Einmo. I’m usually more of a scrappy kind of quilter, but I have to admit I really love this two color version too. I feel like it really makes the design pop!
For both of these quilts, I decided to quilt them fairly lightly. They are a great example of the difference between light quilting and denser quilting. They are both nice and soft with a flowy drape. I talk a little more about the different levels of density and choosing how to quilt your quilt HERE.
I quilted the scrappy version in a stipples with a very subtle yellow thread. For the yardage version, I used loops in pink thread to go with the pink binding. I felt like these appear like they have a lot going on already with the pattern design so I kept the quilting simple and light.
I’d say the thing I like best about this pattern is that it’s easier than it looks. I know it looks sort of hard, but I promise it’s not. If you’ve followed me for a little while, you know that I love patterns that look complicated but aren’t. This particular pattern is so much easier than it looks, that you’ll probably laugh when you find out how it really goes together. All those things you see in this quilt, all the things that are going on, you won’t have to actually make any of those, at least not how you think you will. Even my testers said that the construction was not what they thought it would be.
You can see in the label shot that I used the same print on different background colors for these two. I also used the same print in different colors for the binding. I always add labels to my quilts and take a photo of the labels because I happen to really LOVE my logo labels. Consider adding a label to your quilt too. I always order my custom labels from Meander and Make (affiliate link). They are great labels. You can also use the code SNUGGLEBUGSTITCHING to get 10% off your order. I’ve ordered literally DOZENS of them and have never been disappointed. You can see my demo for attaching those labels with a chunky top stitch HERE. You can also read my post about why you should label your quilts HERE.
