Summer is just around the corner. It’s my favorite season, and with it so close, I can’t stop myself from planning quilts that remind me of summer time!
This patriotic quilt was one of those quilts that make me think of summer. In my previous post, there were instructions for how to make the top for this quilt.
It’s a fun disappearing nine patch quilt that uses layer cakes. It’s not the most common variation of disappearing nine patch, but I think it works well with a scrappier quilt. It also doesn’t require flipping any of the pieces upside down, so it perfect for working with directional prints. So, for example the layer cakes with the words on them don’t get flipped upside down. This may not be a big deal to everyone, but I know it would bother me if some of the prints were going in the wrong direction, upside down, or backwards.
I love the fabric line I used for this one, Land That I Love by Michael Miller Fabrics. The prints are all super cute, and it’s hard to resist petting the lovely quality fabric.
For this one, what I really had in mind was a picnic quilt. Something that looks great spread out on the ground covered in food and family. I decided to use one of the navy prints from the top for the backing. The dark color is great for hiding dirt and grass stains and generally resisting looking dirty. This concept also works out for people who have kids that like to drag stuff around and throw it on the floor.
To finish it off, I decided to go with free motion quilting in stipples, something simple to not compete with all the cute patriotic prints. But, since I couldn’t keep it too simple, I used a scrappy binding. I love scrappy bindings, and this scrappy binding is extra fabulous since it’s also HUGE to match the HUGE disappearing nine patch blocks I used for the quilt top.
Last up, since folded quilts just look so pretty, here’s a picture of this quilt folded up on my kitchen counter.
You can also get a good look at the fun scrappy binding with the decorative stitch.
This one is available in my Etsy Shop.
As always, thank you for taking the time to read my blog post!
I’d love to hear from you! If you have questions or thoughts, you can leave me a comment or email me.
Happy quilting!
