With Halloween coming up, I decided to blog about this quilt I recently completed. It’s not technically a Halloween quilt (missing cutesy Halloween prints), but with the pumpkins and the colors, I decided it’s close enough.
The quilt top was actually the first quilt top I made from my first pattern, “Pumpkins ‘N Patches”, but it’s the second one to get completed. Number one was sold a while ago, and I didn’t get as many pictures of it, but I did post some photos of “Pumpkins ‘N Patches” #1 on my Instagram before sending it off to its forever home.
There are three potential layouts for this pattern. I made all three layouts, and this one is probably my favorite. I talked a little bit more about the pattern in a previous post.
Super Scrappy Backing

I’m not sure calling this a scrappy backing completely does this one justice. For a backing, there was a LOT of piecing in this one. I had a couple fat eighths from that bundle that didn’t get worked into the front, so I decided to center the backing around them. I also used a lot of orange and black prints to coordinate with the colors on the front. The beiges aren’t seen on the front, but I ended up throwing them in on the back to give the back it’s own identity.
Unfortunlately, I don’t have a pattern to offer you for that backing. It was definitely an improv backing. It reminds me of one of my Grandmother’s old quilt tops that I recently finished. Her “pattern” seemed to involve just sewing pieces together until she filled up all the space she needed for the size top she wanted, and that is exactly what I did for this backing.
I think it’s fair to say that this one is more than just a quilt with a scrappy backing. It’s a reversible quilt: organized and patterned cuteness on one side; crazy and scrappy cuteness on the other side.
The Label

While we’ve got this one flipped over to the “back”, I need to spend a bit bragging about my labels!
I had those labels custom made for this pattern. Since it’s my first quilt pattern, it’s special to me, and I thought it needed a special label.
I got the labels from Melanie at Meander + Make. She was able to put that graphic from my pattern onto the label. I’ve bought a lot of labels from her, and the quality is great! She also has lots of great quilt patterns, fabrics, lovely handmade quilts, and more. She was even nice enough to give me a coupon code to share with readers. So, go check out her shop at Meander + Make and use the code SNUGGLEBUGSTITCHING for 10% off!
The Quilting

For this layout, I thought the half and half color scheme was a great opportunity to use multiple quilting designs. I used a serpentine stitch with the walking foot up the middle of the quilt, dividing it into two sections.
For the rest of the quilt, I did some free motion quilting. I decided to cover the dark section of the quilt in swirls and did stipples on the light section.
The Binding

For the binding, I used a solid orange that matches one of the pumpkins.
The binding is secured with a decorative stitch, the same serpentine stitch that I used to divide the quilt into two sections. I love using decorative stitches on the binding. It makes for a very secure binding, and it looks good on both the front and the back.
Details about this quilt:
Pattern: My first quilt pattern, “Pumpkins ‘N Patches”, available in my Etsy Shop along with the actual quilt in this blog.
Fabrics: Most of the prints on the pumpkin side are “Quotation” by Zen Chic for Moda Fabrics. Prints on the back are mostly from my fabric stash. I’m always able to find a lot of lovely, high quality fabrics at Fat Quarter Shop. Check out their Flash Sale for a great deal.
