Partial Dreams Quilt Along: Week 7

Partial Dreams Quilt Along: Week 7

Week 7 of our quilt along starts today! It’s hard to believe that we’re almost done! This week, we’ll make our last 6 blocks so that we can sew them all together to finish our quilt tops next week. The blocks aren’t overly tiny, and there aren’t any seams within the blocks that have to match up. You only have to match up the corners of the blocks. This should make for a quick and easy quilt top assembly once all of your blocks are complete. I hope everyone has enjoyed making these easy blocks while also practicing what may be a new skill for some of us, partial seams.

I mentioned in last week’s post that I wrote this pattern during the Quilter’s Candy Pattern Writing Course back in 2022. I wanted to have a FREE pattern to give as a thank you to my subscribers. BUT, I chose to write a partial seams pattern because of T-shirt quilts, specifically puzzle style t-shirt quilts like the ones I usually make. I get a lot of people asking me how I make them. There’s definitely a lot that goes into making any style T-shirt quilt. BUT you can’t make the puzzle style like I make without some partial seams. So, I thought it would be nice to have an easy, FREE pattern to practice partial seams in a way that they aren’t overwhelming.

Choosing your quilt backing

Since we are SEW close to having this one finished, it’s about time to start thinking about a quilt backing, if you haven’t already. I have the backing requirements for this one listed based on 42″ width of fabric and one seam. It doesn’t really matter if you use a horizontal seam or a vertical seam since this is a square quilt. So, I’d just use whichever works best with the print on your fabric. OR, if there isn’t a direction print on you fabric, even better, just pick whichever seam direction you like best! So, I have the backing requirements for using ony one backing fabric, but I’ve never actually done that for this quilt. The quilt I’m making with you during this quilt along will be my third Partial Dreams quilt, and I’ve used 2 prints in the backing every time. For this quilt all you have to do is divide your yardage by 2 to see how much you need to get for each piece. So, instead of the 4-1/2 yards listed in the pattern, get 2-1/4 yards of each print.

You can see all my fabrics for this quilt in the picture below. I chose a purple and a yellow for the backing because they are the colors of the local high school where my daughter just graduated. (It’s weird talking about my daugther as a high school graduate since it was practically only yesterday that she was a little toddler running aroung the house. Time goes WAY too fast!)

You can also make your backing even scrappier. I’ve made some quilts with a backing so scrappy it’s practically a reversible quilt. Sewing pieces together until you fill the amount of space for your backing is always fun! I did that in this quilt and this quilt and some others that I don’t have on the blog.

Get a custom label for your quilt!

I had some labels made for this pattern! If you want a custom Partial Dreams label with your name on it, you can get one! I order all of my labels from Melanie at Southern Charm Quilts/Meander and Make. They are great labels. You can get order your Partial Dreams Quilt label here. Just be sure to select “Partial Dreams Label” to get the one that looks like the label pictured below.
