This charm quilt is another one of my pre-blog quilts. I’ve recently started to work some of my previous lovelies into the spotlight. It was a fun little project. I love the colors in this one. They reminded me of “Little House on the Prairie”, and I knew I had to have them in one of my quilts. I just didn’t know what kind of quilt at the time I purchased them. Sigh…. I can only assume that I’m not the only quilter who buys fabric first and lets it sit around in my stash while I wait for some inspiration on what to make with it. Comment if you have this habit too.
The inspiration came when I saw this tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Company. The way they went about creating the on point look requires less thinking than starting by laying them out diagonally. Who isn’t happy about reducing the amount of thinking every now and then right? Lucky for me, I already had some charm packs that needed a quilt.
I made this quilt a little bigger than the one in the pattern, changed up the border sizes a little, and added the corner squares.
Borders are a lot of fun for me as a free motion quilter. They are a great opportunity to throw in multiple quilting designs. I used four different types of quilting for this one.
While I’m looking at the picture of the quilt on the porch rail, I have to say – I love a nice crinkly quilt in the sunlight, but I digress…
Back on topic to the specs on this beauty. I was really tempted to use a scrappy binding on this one. I’m almost always tempted to use scrappy bindings because they’re awesome. I used scrappy binding here and here and here. Scrappy bindings are my jam, but I decided not to do that for this one. It has really strong colors, four types of quilting, and did I mention it also has a scrappy backing with some simple appliques (more on that backing in just a bit).
Anyway, this one was already a LOT to look at, so I decided to keep it somewhat simple with a uniform binding. When it was time to bind, I dug through my stash hoping to find the perfect binding for this quilt. I do believe that I found it! I used a flannel plaid in a red, yellow, and orange print. It was scrap from a fall quilt that hasn’t made it’s way on to the blog yet, but you can check it out in my Etsy shop. It also happens to be on sale now!
I don’t think I could have been happier with the binding for this one even if I’d actually bought all the fabrics at the same time and coordinated it on purpose.
Ahh, there’s that crinkly quilt in the sunlight again, but the real star of the show are the feet of one of my favorite quilt holders. I keep telling him his picture makes it onto the blog from time to time, even if it’s only his hands and feet. I feel like his isn’t nearly as excited about being on my blog as he should be.
I like to make scrappy backings/reversible quilts. They remind me of one of my grandmother’s quilt tops that I finished. The style was just to throw in scraps that work until you cover all the area you want to cover. I talk about this a little here.
I also pieced some of the leftover charm squares into the backing, and appliqued the last three on as well.
I joke that my scrappy backings are a result of laziness. Sometimes, I don’t have enough yardage of anything in the right colors/prints, and I just don’t want to go the fabric store. This would be one of those situations where trying to get out of doing something takes longer than just doing the something; I am guilty of this a lot more often than I should be. Making those scrappy backings almost always takes longer than going to the fabric store, but I keep doing it because I just like the scrappy backings.
