I’m a little late posting my second finish for Summer WIP It, but here it is. I made this one during a time when I had decided I to try to prioritize making whatever I felt like making every now and then. I was working full time and running my quilting business as a side gig. I didn’t have nearly as many custom orders as I do now, but between the full time job and the kids’ activities it kept me busy. I wanted to participate in some quilt alongs. So, I signed up for all of the quilt alongs for Southern Charm Quilts book A Life With Quilts (affiliate link). I tested one of the patterns in that book and wanted to try all of the others too. I managed to keep up with the first two quilt alongs. In fact, I disregarded the schedule, finished the tasks way before the week they were scheduled, and even finished one of the quilt tops on day 1. BUT, I dropped the ball on quilt along #3. My custom orders were starting to pick up, and I couldn’t not work on them. This balance between what I want to work on and what I need to work on is something I haven’t figured out yet, but I’m working on it! This one was the Sassy Granny Quilt, the second WIP on my list for this challenge. You check out my posts on my first two quilts, Mariposa and Lulu Louise.
A little about this quilt
Sometimes I struggle with deciding how to quilt my quilts, and sometimes I can picture how I want to quilt it the whole time I’m making the quilt. This one was one of the easy ones where I could picture the quilting the whole time I was working on it. For some reason, I always pictured this one with one quilting in the double c’s in yellow thread. When I got the thread out, I decided to go with pink instead of yellow because the yellow didn’t pop much against that subtle off-white scrappy background.
I used a scrappy backing of blues and yellow. I actually basted this one on October 30, 2023. So, if you thought that glue sticks wouldn’t hold long enough for basting… My glue stick basting lasted 10 months before I finally quilted this one.
I didn’t really have a plan for the binding on this one. After I finished qulitng this one, some fabric I bought last year caught my eye. It was a coral pink, and I thought it would look nice against the patchwork style blue print on the back.
My last quilt on the schedule for this challenge
This one is another pattern by Southern Charm Quilts, the Trippy Quilt (affiliate link). I tested the pattern for her around the same time when I was working on my Sassy Granny quilt that was my second WIP finish for this challenge. I was actually super busy during that time too, but I really wanted to make that one… I finished everything I needed to finish for the testing in time, but never got it quilted up. I basted it a while ago, probably around the same time as I basted the one for this month. I used a blue granite print for the backing. I’m super excited to get this one finished!
Challenge Participant Finish
For part of this challenge, I wanted to feature some quilts that were sent in by participants. This lovely quilt was sent in by Peggy Hazen. I’m posting this picture and the story with her permission. She started working on this quilt years ago with her mom. They finished the top together, and it had been in a box since 2016 when her mom passed away. I am honored that she chose my Summer WIP It Challenge to participate in and finish this quilt. What a precious treasure with memories of her mom!
Partial Dreams Quilt Along Participant Finish
My Partial Dreams Quilt Along wrapped up a few months ago, but you can still get the pattern – it’s FREE – and check out all the posts I made for the quilt along by clicking on the “Quilt Alongs” tab from the menu. You can get that FREE pattern HERE.
During that quilt along, I did a post where I featured some progress pictures sent in by participants. One of the participants who sent in some progress pictures was Fran. I really like the colors she chose for her quilt. Fran was nice enough to send me a picture of her completed quilt, and I love it! The geometric quilting looks great with that design! Great job Fran!
That’s all I’ve got for today
