Checkerboard Quilt: FREE Pattern

Checkerboard Quilt: FREE Pattern

This is a checkerboard quilt I made with leftover layer cake squares. I use layer cakes a lot, and I almost always have a few of the squares leftover. I designed the pattern for this quilt to make the best use of my left over layer cake squares, but it would also work great for larger scraps.

Every effort was made to catch mistakes, but since it was only tested by me, there may be some errors. If you have questions, please feel free to leave me a comment or email me. The pattern does have a few links to youtube videos of me demoing parts of the process. I am NOT a hardcore youtuber. In fact, I’ve only recently added a few videos to my channel. So, laugh if you must, but please be nice and respectful. The videos are meant to help you in the process, but they are not professional quality.

This one is both a checkerboard quilt and a nine patch quilt. It has both a scrappy look and a distinct nine patch look. I’ve always been a fan of scrappy backgrounds, so this one was a lot of fun for me. Keeping with the scrappiness, I also used a semi-scrappy binding made from the two backing prints.

I gave this one a pieced back. I love pieced backs and have posts on quilts with pieced backing here and here. For this one I just used one yard cuts of two different prints, squared them off, and sewed them together for a quadrant style backing.

I wanted this one to have LOTS of quilting. I chose to cover it in swirls. All the soft curves in the swirls make a lovely contrast to the 504 yummy little squares.

Every one always asks me where I get my labels. They are custom made by Melanie at Meander + Make. Melanie was nice enough to give me a coupon code to share with you. Use the code SNUGGLEBUGSTITCHING for 10% off!

This quilt is for sale in my Etsy Shop. You can go directly to the listing for this quilt here.
