Here’s my most recently completed quilt. This little lovely is my second version of my new pattern First Steps Baby Quilt. I talk a little about how the pattern came about here. The pattern is currently 10% off in my Etsy Shop, no coupon code needed.
Why I made this little quilt
This one was a duel purpose make. My original quilt I made in this pattern was for a sweet little baby boy, and I wanted to make it in baby girl colors as well. I’ve used different combos of some of those florals in several previous quilts – a simple squares quilt that I’ve sold several of. The most recent one is also on the blog. I thought those fabrics would look real pretty in my pattern, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.
The second purpose? I designed this pattern to be a quick and fun make. So, I decided to time myself to see how quickly I could make the top. From pulling the fabrics to finished top only took me an hour and 45 minutes! A few little disclaimers on that super quick time: 1) I wrote this pattern, so I didn’t have to read through it carefully like someone else might 2) This quilt is appropriate for someone making their first quilt, but an absolute beginner probably can’t make it as quickly as an experienced quilter who also wrote the pattern. Even so, it’s still a quick and fun make.
Binding, Quilting, and Backing
Sometimes people ask me how I do my binding. It’s a hybrid of making binding and using backing as binding. It makes it easier for me to get nice corners, and it uses less fabric per width compared to traditional binding. The best thing about this method: it’s the least tricky binding method I’ve ever tried. There’s nothing special to do around the corners, no trickiness from joining the beginning and ending, and no weird areas from having to tuck the end of the binding into a pouch. I do have a post with a tutorial for this binding technique.
I backed this one in a solid pink and quilted it with stipples in shiny pink thread.
The Label
People always ask me where I get my labels. They’re custom made, lovely, and durable. Who wouldn’t want to sew one of theses onto their quilt?
I get them from Melanie at Meander + Make. Melanie was nice enough to give me a coupon code to share with you. Use the code SNUGGLEBUGSTITCHING for 10% off!
Both the pattern and the actual quilt are currently available in my shop.
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog!
I hope you enjoyed it!
